Abstract:
Many years ago I proved that a so-called double of a free group is residually free, given the right conditions. In recent joint work with Ben Fine, Chuck Miller and Doug Troeger we proved, a little surprisingly, that many such doubles are virtually free-by-cyclic. In my talk I will discuss this work and raise some problems that arise naturally from it.
